Forget the blue and yellow beachy scheme (hello, the 90s called, they want their colour scheme back! Ooo… bitchy. Although the 90s are coming back in, so maybe I’ll eat my words in a few months), beach shacks have come a long way and the styles I like are havens from the surf with a relaxed and homemade feel.
Think white walls, bleached or light wood with bright furnishings softening the look. Feature walls are out, but whole rooms of soft colour, or wallpaper, teamed with pale furniture can create a homely and relaxed feel, and no kitsch lifebuoys in sight!
First, some beautiful exteriors. I love weathered wood that blends in with its surrounds, sharp dark tones that contrast with Australia’s stark sun, and bright colours that pop (click through the slideshow for all the images):
Beautiful timber (through furniture, flooring, or windows) warm up an interior, and create a lovely ambience. Click through the slideshow for all the images.
And furnishing beach houses is easy- go to the op shop, find some beautiful old frames and fill them with anything. Black and white photos, cute art works, poems, favourite quotes, pages from books, etc. Find some old furniture and paint it with bright colours- Still like your beach house to reflect the ocean? How great are these vintage oars they’ve used as an artwork? They give a nice timber feel to the wall, while referencing the location. Click through the slideshow for all the images.
Now… who wants to buy me an old shack I can do up?? I’ll let you stay there occasionally (maybe two weekends a year). Sounds reasonable? Click through the slideshow for all the images.
